Hugh Kerr produced a limited amount of Heathergems, which were sold through two or three shops in the Highlands during the 1960′s. In the late 60′s he met Mr Charles Buyers a Glasgow accountant who was looking for small manufacturing or craft businesses to be set up in the Wick and Caithness area on behalf of the Highlands and Islands Development Corporation. Mr Buyers took the idea to the HIDB who rejected it saying it had no future. Mr Buyers decided to back Hugh Kerr himself and the company was set up in a small factory in East Kilbride in 1970.

The man was a genius and sadly died tragically young at the age of only 37. He left behind a huge legacy of work that is still celebrated around the world. Have a great time if you are attending a Burns Supper or just having a wee dram and some haggis for the man that was Robert Burns.

Heathergems the company started in 1970, however, they have been produced since the 1950′s. Hugh Kerr, a craftsman from Glenlivet was originally producing flooring from beech wood. After the Second World War as wood was rationed an alternative raw material was needed. Hugh Kerr developed the idea and started to use heather to produce the floor tiles. This proved a timely and expensive process so he decided to make smaller pieces thus the Heather jewellery began.

Every Heathergem item is unique. No two are ever exactly the same meaning each single piece is an individual, one of our major benefits.
We cannot guarantee that the colours you see on the website are the actual colour you will receive. If you ask for specific item colours we will look for pieces as near as possible to your request.
Please use the Special Instruction Box at your order check out stage to specify individual colours. We will do our best to match but please remember that each Heathergem item is unique, natural, organic and depends on a number of factors including the type and age of the Heather raw material used.
Once again, no two are ever exactly the same, thank you!
